Yamaha Aims to Unite Anglers

by Ted Lund

Yamaha, the world’s leader in two-stroke and four-stroke outboard power, hopes to unite fresh- and saltwater anglers on the conservation front.

Bass4Salt FINALBass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation is based around a website —  bassforsalt.com — that features an intuitive online interface, which enables fishermen to advocate for angling-related conservation issues by writing, calling or tweeting legislators with pre-written engagements.

The hope is to bring anglers together as grassroots advocates by asking Congressmen and Senators to support recreational fishing rights through legislation.

“It’s really important for us to get this right,” says Martin Peters, Yamaha’s manager for government relations. “Fishing advocacy can’t be just a coastal issue. It has to be a national grass-roots effort in any area where fishing access is threatened.”

Bass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation was launched in conjunction with the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, the BASS anglers photo 8world’s largest freshwater fishing organization. The website offers a simple, easy-to-use tool for anglers to stand up against misguided policies. Anglers are empowered by having the ability to reach out to senators and representatives — even the President — with the click of a mouse, as policy battles move through Congress and the federal bureaucracy. The platform also offers action alerts for anglers who sign up for the newsletter, keeping them up-to-date on policies affecting sportfishing.

One of bassforsalt.com’s greatest contributions to angling advocacy lies in the overwhelming number of anglers participating in freshwater fishing, according to Peters.

“There are more than 22 million freshwater anglers who can lend a powerful voice to their 11 million saltwater brethren,” says Peters. “Bass fishing has an established, passionate and loyal fan base that’s primed for grassroots advocacy through sponsorships with organizations such as B.A.S.S.”

Bassmaster Elite Series pro and Yamaha team member Jeff Kriet agrees.

ProBlogWindow“Bass Anglers for Saltwater Conservation isn’t just for bass anglers,” says Kriet. “Many of the anglers I know fish in both salt- and freshwater. The issues our coastal fisheries currently face could easily translate into freshwater if we do not take action.”

A major concern for the future of saltwater fishing is the restriction of access to thriving fish stocks, as is currently happening in the Gulf of Mexico with red snapper. Once the premier recreational species in the Gulf, the federal season for red snapper was reduced to nine days in 2014, and only 10 days in 2015. According to data from the National Marine Fisheries Service, however, Gulf red snapper are nearing their highest level in decades.

“In order to ensure that our children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy the same fishing experiences as the anglers of today, regardless of what they fish for or where they like to fish, we must raise a unified voice to the nation’s legislators,” says Kriet. “When the 33 million anglers in the U.S. come together for positive change, we are a force that cannot be ignored.”
